Why Your Avatar Matters More Than You Think

First, let’s get the basics down. Demographics are the who behind your avatar.
Ask yourself:
How old are they?
Are they male or female?
What is their job or career background?
Where do they live?
Are they parents, caregivers, retirees?
Example:
“My ideal avatar is a woman over 50, entering a new chapter of life. She’s eager to start an online business but feels overwhelmed by tech and unsure where to begin.”

Be specific! When you try to speak to everyone, you end up connecting with no one. Don’t be afraid to narrow down—you can always expand later.
Step 2: Know Their Pain Points and Desires
This is where the magic happens. Your audience doesn’t buy products—they buy solutions to their problems.
To truly connect, you need to understand:
What challenges are they facing right now?
What frustrations do they have?
What dreams or goals are they chasing?
Example Pain Points:
She’s frustrated with tech, unsure how to package her knowledge, and worried that she’s “too old” to start something new.
Example Desires:
She dreams of financial freedom, running a business with confidence, and having more time for herself and her family.
Quick Activity:
Write out a “Day in the Life” for your avatar. Picture what their daily routine looks like, what struggles they face, and what wins they’re hoping for. This will help you create products and content that feel like they were made just for them.
Step 3: Know Where to Find Them
Now that you know who they are and what they want, it’s time to figure out where they are.
Ask yourself:
Which social media platforms do they use? (Facebook? Instagram? TikTok?)
Do they read blogs or listen to podcasts? Which ones?
Are they hanging out in online groups or communities?
Pro Tip:
Get curious. Join Facebook groups, listen to podcast episodes, scroll through comment sections. Pay attention to the questions they’re asking and the language they use. The better you understand their world, the easier it is to speak their language.
